Secondary Site: Ghost Town Architect
2024
This site-specific work investigates unfinished housing projects in suburban Kunming, my hometown in China. The building clusters have remained vacant for years due to financial collapse. Imagining an architect designing these buildings that would ultimately fail to fulfill their intended function, I engaged in a collaboration between myself and the fictional architect to create a simulacra through paper models. These replicas share an ambiguous sense of realness with the unfinished buildings, both remain inert in time. On the fences surrounding the construction site, the developer put up advertising slogans. Parts of the characters fell off the board due to deterioration, leaving the words partially legible, such as: “找到回家的路(Find the Way Home)” (as seen in drawing #5).
